Delivering Leveled Text through TeenBiz3000® to Improve Content Comprehension for English Language Learners
Abstract
This action research project was designed with the purpose of determining whether the computer-based reading intervention program TeenBiz3000® would be an alternative resource to provide grade appropriate informational leveled text to increase English Language Learners Lexile® levels and content area comprehension, in addition to increasing motivation to read in middle school language learners. Sixty-six English Language Learners in grades six through eight participated in the program from January 7, 2013 until March 15, 2013. Over the ten week period, sixty-six students completed sessions during the appointed class time and many of them used the program at home as well. Results indicate that the program is a valuable resource to pre-teach content related material, to promote language acquisition, and to increase motivation in struggling English language students at the middle school level.
